Pizza
Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.
Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.
Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Mesa deserves 4 stars for two reasons: the quality of pizza versus what else Iowa City has to offer, and the number of vegetarian options. The only place that I enjoy as much, is The Wedge. Without giving one more credit than the other, I'll just say Mesa has a unique variety of non-meat specialties apart from other I.C. menus. Recommendation: Avocado Delight (But perhaps avoid the Eggplant. Found it a bit soggy & disappointing.)

One of the employees there was drunk and extremely racist towards me. I will say I have never dealt with anything like that in a restaurant. It offended me so much I wanted to call the police. I will never go to this establishment ever again. I can't believe how insensitive all of their employees are.

Three words... macaroni cheese pizza! Granted I had sampled some fermented beverages before venturing here but I think it would be just as great sober, perhaps even better. Place was a little ratty with all the drunk college kids (I'd go there too after drinking all night) but I definitely will go back next time in Iowa City.

Got to give a lot of love to a place that is willing to throw anything under the Sun on my pizza. Our favorite thus far has been the pulled pork in onion rings over BBQ sauce. The standards are always solid, but seriously you can't stop at this place and not get something a little bit exciting on your pizza. Bacon, cheese burgers, fries, avocado, kalamata olives, feta, and just about anything else you can imagine will grace the pie if you desire. Perhaps our favorite thing about it is the fact that you can get a half and half pizza with half cheese and pepperoni and half specialty for about five bucks less than a specialty pizza. You make sure that the kiddos have something they like and that Mom and Dad get to experiment a little bit. There's a little bit of room to sit in here, and the place is abnormally long physically. The walls are graced with a bunch of art the reminds me of something from an old school Ghostbusters movie. Some art from bands and what I believe is a local photographer also graces the wall. Not really my dick, but it's nice to see that they're supporting folks in the area. All in all, this place is legit. Really good pizza with a lot of different options and while it's a little bit more expensive then the stuff you order at a chain, it's well worth the extra to support a local spot and get something that you couldn't get elsewhere.

Came in on a rainy night from out of town expecting the place to be dead due to the weather, but low and behold there was a decent crowd that seemed mildly intoxicated for it only being 10pm on a Thursday. If the staff had half the excitement as the customers I might have had a good experience. Came in starving and ordered 4 slices when 2 is likely all a grown man should eat. Left a $4 tip. When I went to find the hot sauce to put on my pizza they only had it behind the counter. Told me in would be a quarter... Are you kidding me? Yea lets run my credit card again for a quarter especially after tipping $4. The pizza came out of the reheat ovens fast, probably too fast as 2 of the slices weren't very crispy on the bottom. Overall very disappointing... However if you do go try the Mac n cheese as that was the best by far.

When you think of pizza by the slice, you think of Mesa of course. Well unless you think of Falbos, but if you want something more than a sausage pizza, then think Mesa. So you walk in and head to the back were they have this pizza buffet sitting out in front of you with huge slices of their classic Mac and Cheese, Pulled Pork and Onion Rings, Eggplant, and Southwest Burrito (only to name a small fraction). After a brief survey you choose one ( or two if hungry). They throw it in the oven for 3-5 minutes and bam, you have a slice of melt in your mouth goodness to enjoy. Before you know it, your slice is gone, then you wish you had that second, or if you thought ahead, you start into your second. By the time you are done, your are stuffed, but happy as you sit back and finally notice the strange artwork on the walls. Great place, great food, and depending when you come (Bar Close is crazy time) fast service. [It's still fast at bar close, just lots more people.]

Well, well, well I am late to this pizza party that is Mesa! I love pizza by the slice and more importantly pizza that is delicious, they were right before my eyes on the ped mall and I never tried them till today......How did I miss this awesome place? They sell several varieties of pizza by the slice, they have them on display so you can see whats available at that time. I got the pepperoni which is my fav anywhere so very easy decision for me. The crust is thin and crunchy with a nice taste to it. The sauce is a great blend, more on the medium side of not too strong or sweet, just right. The cheese is good has a good blend and does not fall off the pizza. All put together it is very good! I was happy I found a place this good that serves slices. They have a little something for everyone here, quality pizza is a great thing.
(5)Sean B.
Specialty pizza at a very competitive price. They have all kinds of crazy combinations and the pizza is always cooked to a perfect crispness. The line late at night gets excessive but depending on how much time you are willing to wait it is probably worth the wait. Slice for slice, the best pizza in the downtown area by a long shot. Favorite slice: chicken pesto
(4)Connie H.
Love these types of pizza places where they have a huge assortment of toppings. I've seen many similar types of places on other college campuses. Ranging from macaroni and cheese to eggplant parmesan to steak and fries (fries on your pizza?) to even a marshmellow and nutella pizza I saw this weekend (halloween special maybe?), they pretty much offer anything you're looking for. I love the ones with guac on them too. :) I always ask for my pizzas to be extra crispy, so if you like your pizza nice and crispy, ask for that too! Otherwise, sometimes the dough is a bit too doughy and chewy for me.
(4)Rex J.
I only visited for the weekend, but I heard this place was a night life staple. I've never seen so much diversity in pizza. I'd highly recommend if you're into crazy toppings!
(5)Rianna R.
I've tried this place a few times and their lunch special during the week for the portion is a steal. However, I can never seem to find a speciality pizza kind that I really like, I've tried their chicken enchilada pizza and their chicken cordon bleu pizza and neither one I was overly impressed with. I'm sure if you find a speciality pizza that you like it is consistently great I just still have yet to find it.
(3)Doug W.
Tastes good when you are wandering by in the middle of the night, though I don't think the pizza is much to write home about.
(3)W Q.
great pizza selections. one of my favorite places for a specialty pizza! if you are looking for a variety of pizza this is the place. this Mesa place is top on the list for pizza! (still love pagliai's pizza but this place is def a good competitor!)

Mesa Pizza is a bit of a legend among my friends in Iowa City, and here's why: one night, after countless hours of drinking copious amounts of alcohol, a group of coeds stumbled into Mesa in order to preempt their inevitable hangovers. One friend in particular, seeing that his favorite slice was almost out, swayed in line patiently until he could claim the last of the- wait for it- avocado, steak and chipotle pizza. His drunken enthusiasm compromised his ability to maintain a grasp on the slice, and the next thing he knew, the slice had landed face-down on the floor. Not one to waste food, but also not one to deliberately ingest other peoples' hair, he had a choice to make... long story short, my friend ate this pizza off of the floor. Such is his love for Mesa. So, we made Mesa a priority for our Iowa City tour last weekend, hoping to secure a few slices of the southwestern-flavored pizza for ourselves. The most impressive part about Mesa is the selection- vegan pizza, buffalo chicken pizza, mac and cheese pizza! Since the avocado, steak, and chipotle pizza was unavailable, we ended up ordering a full pizza (8 slices, perfect for 4 [sober] people) so we could get that variety. I would have preferred a vegan slice myself (because it's like a unicorn... vegan pizza in the midwest?!), but I went with the flow, figuring the avocado would redeem whatever crazy pizza came out of the oven. Now, I've been reading that people don't love the crust here- I'd say it was the best part. It had a nice crunch to it, but wasn't cardboard-y or too flat. The weird part was the pizza itself. Now, forgive my admittedly non-fratty palate, but the combination just wasn't working for me- I love avocado on pretty much everything, but I'm more of a pizza purist (a discovery I made on this very day). I didn't like how the whole thing was slathered in a heavy chipotle mayo (MAYO!) sauce, and the "steak" was more of a ground beef. It tasted like it could have been Taco Bell's pizza (which isn't a bad thing; love me some T-Bell!), which was a bit of a disappointment considering they have so many awesome looking varieties of pizza going on. I'd come back here in a heartbeat, if only out of curiosity for the other 500 flavors they have going on. While in any other case I'd opt for a simple Pizza Margherita, Mesa is a great place to branch out and try something unique.

While there are several pizza joints scattered throughout Iowa City, if you need to grab a slice or two, this is certainly the place to be! They have a wide variety (usually 10-14 options) of vegetarian, chicken and other meat varieties. Their Mac & Cheese pizza is the best I've ever had. It only takes a couple minutes for the slice of your choice to come out warm and with just the right level of crispiness! Due to their pricing structure, I recommend buying pizza by the slice rather than whole pizzas. Their pricing for whole pizzas needs to be reevaluated. Regardless, if you're in Iowa City, even for just a weekend, this is a highly recommended spot to dine in or take out!
(5)Joe S.
If you want pizza by the slice this is the way to go. I make it a point to go here whenever I'm in Iowa city. The prices are reasonable-if you buy two slices you get free pop. The macaroni pizza is super good! Also the decor is very unique, but I can dig it :)

TERRIBLE SERVICE!!!!! Do not order from here! I ordered a few pizzas from here and after order they told me it would be about an hour, 1:45 min later I called to check on it. When they answered the girl on the phone said "yea I'm sorry we just sent a 400$ order to the volleyball tournament and it would be about another 20-30 min! I asked to speak with a manager and He yells from the back tell them it'll be there in a few so I asked to actually speak to him, upon getting him on phone Hey. Said do you know how far away you are? I said well according to my Yelp app you are 5 min away, he said no you are like 30-40 min away and there is like a river and stop lights and Sh*t, He then told me how they were too busy and it was a football game, I said the football game has been over for 7 hours he then said "dude do you know how F**king busy we are!!!" I said no but I can't believe you just cussed at a customer he said "well I'm F**king busy" then hung up on me!! Not even five minutes later the delivery girl called saying "hi I am on the way with your pizza I got lost" I told her nevermind after we hung up I looked it up and it was a 6 min drive totaling 4 blocks!!! I am giving 1 star because in order to write a review I have to gives at least one! Not a good impression since we were in town on a recruiting visit with University of IOWA.

Slices! And tons of choices!! The pizza Gods would be pleased. Macaroni and cheese pizza? Chicken-pesto, you want just regular cheese--they got it. I'm still waiting for a bagel and cream cheese pizza (never seen that) but this place is innovative and gourmet. I had a roni and sausage slice and a chicken pesto. The chicken pesto stood out but both were phenomenal. Don't know why you'd ever go to Pizza on Dubuque--no offense... I guess Dubuque does have a bathroom. This slice house is visionary and quality.
(5)Kevin A.
Called four times. They wouldn't pick up the first three. On the fourth someone answered, mumbled something, and then they just set the phone down and went around chatting in the background.

Best pizza by the slice in town. Great variety of meat and vegetarian pizzas. My favorites are the caprese and eggplant parmigian but there are many other good options including the very popular Mac and Cheese.
(5)Bradford H.
I've been back several times while van camping / biking in the area. Mesa still continues to be a favorite. I love the Philly Cheesesteak and monthly offerings. Nobody has more kinds of attractive vegetarian pizza slices available at a moment's notice. They are beautiful, too! If I could say one thing frustrates me, it's having to choose what to try. There are that many tasty and visually stunning options.
(5)Aaron P.
Mesa is a one-of-a-kind pizza experience in downtown IC! They offer many awesome and unique types of pizza! From a standard piece of pepperoni and sausage to Mac and cheese, buffalo chicken, spicy chicken taco, and many others, Mesa is an excellent choice for anybody wanting a few great slices of exotic and delicious pizza! It's a stop for me every time I'm in town!
(5)Alejandro S.
Positives: One of the biggest, most impressive selections of pizzas to choose from. Ingredients are generally good, and the pizza is always yummy. Negatives: They never have the pizza slices I want to try that day available. I look over the extensive menu and begin to crave a certain slice. Then, I ask them for a slice and they constantly look at me like "stupid, we don't have that". The service isn't the nicest, but it is essentially a fast food place, and they try to get you in and out of there fast. Finally, the crust isn't great. I'm not a huge fan of crust to begin with, but I can see why there are people who complain. Another Positive: Friday nights, after hitting up the bars. Mesa pizza tastes like individual slices of heaven. Just for that reason, I'm going to keep coming back.
(3)Karrey S.
Great variety of meaty and vegetarian pizzas, and in my opinion, they've got the best crust in town. The staff is what you'd expect in a place like this, mostly ignoring you unless they have to, but who cares? You're telling them what you want and they're passing it to you by the cash register. The noise in this place is deafening, especially when it's filled with bro-dudes, so I would suggest taking your pizza and eating outside if the weather is nice. The location makes it nice for people-watching, for sure.
(4)Ed J.
It seems like just about everyone who reviewed likes this place. I'm here to rock the boat a little. I was not impressed. And I don't think I'll be back again. The positive: Yes, tons of different toppings. Some of them more creative than others. And some of them look really good. The negative: 1) The crust. It's terrible. The crust is the most important part of a pizza. And Mesa's crust is dry, stiff, chalky and tastes like it's half baked. 2) Some of the toppings are just not all that great. I'd much rather have a nice slice of cheese pizza than some of the crazy combinations. I miss Pittsburgh's Mineo's pizza. $1.70 a huge slice of cheese pizza, beats these fancy $3.50 a slice here hands down any day.
(2)Sean W.
Fresh ingredients and great crust. They have tons of gourmet concoctions for toppings! From many vegetarian ones to steak&fries to mac&cheese to.... They have a line-up out to bang your head on which to get, then they stick your slice(s) back in the oven for a fresh flash heat that sets it off. $3 Large slices, various salads too. Great late night after the bars scene too! One of my favs is the chicken cordon blue.
(4)Ginny L.
Great place to go for a cheap slice of pizza. Lots of fun options and great prices! Definitely my go to place for pizza in Iowa City.
(5)Lucy S.
Lately, this is my very favorite pizza in Iowa City. Ignore those weird buffalo chicken or avocado or mac n cheese concoctions and go for the Basil, Mozzarella and Tomato pizza. Fresh-seeming ingredients, never greasy, and almost always available. It hits the spot late at night, though sometimes I really can't deal with the wait! It's the slowest place to get your slice at 2am.
(4)Chris C.
This place has an awesome selection of pizza, and you can order by the slice which is great. The last time I was here they must have had 15-20 different kinds of slices to choose from. I've had the philly cheesesteak, mac n' cheese, buffalo chicken, and some kind of Mexican pizza with lots of cheddar cheese on top, The buffalo chicken and the mac n' cheese were my favorites, while the philly cheesesteak one didn't quite stack up to the philly pizza from Domino's and the Mexican one just didn't have a very good combination of flavors for a slice of pizza. The consistency of the crust isn't quite how I like it, but I'm giving this place four stars for their variety and originality. The slices of pizza are pretty large - I always have a huge appetite, but two slices here completely fills me up. Even one slice by itself is pretty filling. I think two slices and a drink was only around $6.50, so you get more bang for your buck here than at a lot of other places. They're open late too!
(4)Roy S.
Mesa Pizza has so many types of creative pizza slices! I love the variety. Although it's not the best pizza I have had, it's a good choice in Iowa City. It provides a change to your taste buds of the typical pizza. This is a popular stop after the bars so if you do not want to run into the bar crowd, you may want to avoid after midnight.
(4)Marc M.
The best place I know of to stop for a quick lunch in downtown Iowa City. Their two slice + drink special makes for a pretty substantial meal at a reasonable price. Very friendly if sometimes quirky service and a great selection of thin crust New York style pizza slices to choose from. There are some very uniquely American sauce and topping combinations, some that are pretty authentically Italian, and some in between. Lots of great non-meat options if you're vegetarian. Every now and then they won't have your favorite kind at the moment, but there's so much else too choose from I don't think it's likely anyone will ever be completely out of luck. If you find their pizza's a bit too "rare" for your tastes, ask them to cook yours a little longer and they will. I've never ordered a whole pizza from them or had anything delivered, so I can't comment on any of that, however.
(5)Kelly K.
Fresh, friendly, and fast. The crew is happy to describe the pizza creations for the day, which boast lots of fresh veggies and basil and cheeses, plus some meats and fun stuff like macaroni and cheese. I like to get a slice and a salad for just $6.
(5)Ariana W.
There were a ton of different slices available. I ended up choosing one with tomato, spinach and feta. I was a bit apprehensive about the crust, because it didn't look like any I'd ever eaten before. It looked kind of like sourdough--do people make pizza crust out of sourdough?--but it tasted fine. Quick, well-priced and lots of options--I'd say it would be difficult to go wrong here.
(3)Austin B.
One of the great cheap lunches downtown, and believe me there aren't enough of those. $6 gets you two big slices of eccentric pizza (the toppings are eccentric, not the manner in which the pizza is sliced).
(5)Melissa T.
Yum! I'm a relatively picky pizza eater and I must say, this place is my new vice. For $6.50 you get either two large slices and a drink, or a large slice, garden salad with drink! Amazing price for the fun and inventive food you get. Their selection of pizza is amazing. I've been a handful of times and have had a different slice each time. It can be overwhelming your first time, trying to decide, but I bet you'll be pleased with whatever you go with. The toppings are fresh, sauce is great and the crust is yummy. I'm not even a crust eater and I'll finish the entire slice. The staff is super friendly and patient (even if you stand and debate and ask questions like I do.) Try this place, you won't be disappointed.
(4)Charles A.
I've been to Mesa twice and its the place to be on a Friday or Saturday night. Great selection of pizza, $3 per slice, huge pieces of pizza. I've had the pepperoni, meat lovers, and the chicken bacon ranch. I've heard the Mac and Cheese pizza is also really good!
(5)Chris C.
Best slices in town. They typically have a variety of veggie and non veggie slices on hand. My personal favs are their southwesten taco and buffalo chicken.
(4)Erin K.
I was in Iowa City for a weekend from St. Louis and maybe it was at least partially the joy of finding REAL pizza (not thin crust with provel) - but Mesa blew me away. The crust was fantastic, and everyone I was with loved what they got. The meaty people raved about the barbecue pizza, and I was particularly fond of the white pizza with feta, artichokes, mozarella, garlic, and spinach. The mushroom pizza was also really good. It looks like your pizza choices change each time you go in, but they have a HUGE variety and you're bound to find one or two slices that are delicious and what you're craving. It's yummy, filling (we had two slices and a soda and were set to go swing dancing for the next six hours without flagging in energy or starving), and cheap! Good deal.
(5)A.C. H.
A straight up solid pizza joint. The pizzas can range from simple to slightly outlandish to completely WTF, You put what on a pizza?! Strangely enough, all of them are actually pretty good and they are constantly coming up with new flavors. It's also cheap. As many others have noted, you can get two filling slices with 6 bucks. You can get a can of soda for an extra .50. I have to knock them down a few points for their slow delivery, but otherwise, it's an excellent spot to hit at 2 pm or 2 am although remember: you'll have to deal with the foot traffic from all of the drunk kids if you go at 2 am (they do know how to keep it together during the day).
(4)Kim G.
Reasonable price and lots of good choices of specialty pizza from chicken cordon blue to guacamole. Outstanding
(5)Becky O.
Unique pizza - good. But in a town of so many awesome choices...

Fresh, friendly, and fast. The crew is happy to describe the pizza creations for the day, which boast lots of fresh veggies and basil and cheeses, plus some meats and fun stuff like macaroni and cheese. I like to get a slice and a salad for just $6.

One of the great cheap lunches downtown, and believe me there aren't enough of those. $6 gets you two big slices of eccentric pizza (the toppings are eccentric, not the manner in which the pizza is sliced).

I only visited for the weekend, but I heard this place was a night life staple. I've never seen so much diversity in pizza. I'd highly recommend if you're into crazy toppings!

(4)Melissa T.

Good deal.

Reasonable price and lots of good choices of specialty pizza from chicken cordon blue to guacamole. Outstanding
(5)Becky O.
Unique pizza - good. But in a town of so many awesome choices...
(3)Rianna R.
(5)Brian K.
